Program Description

Newport Academy is a highly individualized, gender-specific residential facility for adolescent males suffering from issues around trauma, mental health, eating disorders and substance abuse.  We believe that adolescent self-destructive behaviors are external manifestations, or symptoms, of underlying internal issues.  Treatment at Newport Academy focuses on underlying, causal issues including trauma, and involves CBT, DBT, EMDR, Guided Imagery, Motivational Interviewing, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Art Therapy, Yoga and other modalities.

We have a maximum of only 6 residents at any given time and have 25 staff members for just 6 teens.  Each resident receives a minimum of 30 hours of therapy and counseling every week. Minimum length of stay is 45 days.

One cannot successfully treat adolescents without addressing the family.  Newport Academy comes from a family systems approach and families are very involved in treatment.  Families have the ability to participate from 8 to 16 hours each week.  Families take part in weekly family therapy, our weekly Saturday Family Program, an 8-hour Parent Intensive, and a 2-day Family Intensive Workshop (both intensives are done with just one family at a time.

Our medical team is led by Dr. David Smith, founder of the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinics and also includes a full time psychiatrist and a full time psychiatric nurse practitioner.  Our clinical team is lead by Dr. Barbara Nosal, a PhD and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Residents attend school daily.  Each campus has a classroom and a full time credentialed teacher.  We are an accredited private school.
