Program Description

Kootenai Behavioral Health Center is a service of Kootenai Medical Center which is located in beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Formerly known as North Idaho Behavioral Health, Kootenai Behavioral Health Center’s Youth Residential Treatment Program is an intensive, medically modeled, psychiatric residential treatment center staffed by board certified child and adolescent psychiatrists who provide expert evaluation and treatment for adolescents between 13 and 17 years of age. We are dedicated to providing high quality intensive mental health rehabilitation.

Rigorous, multidisciplinary treatment occurs in a secure, highly supervised treatment center. Providing daily treatment and support are a highly-experienced team of health professionals and educators, including board certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, licensed, masters-level therapists, special education teachers, specially trained psychiatric nurses, mental health specialists, certified recreation therapists, and licensed case managers. Our board certified psychiatrists are on site on a daily basis.   We also have the ability to provide psychological testing, including neuro-psychological testing.

Kootenai Behavioral Health Center offers multimodal, evidence-based treatment specifically developed to meet the individual needs of each teen. The primary psychosocial treatment utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which has been proven in empirical studies to provide excellent rehabilitation for teens with various diagnoses.   Many of our therapists are also specifically trained in the use of Dialectic Behavioral Therapy.

To meet the academic needs of our teens, Kootenai Behavioral Health Center has developed a strong academic program called Kootenai Academy.   Fully licensed by the Idaho Stated board of Education, the school can grant credits which can transfer to any school in the country.   Kootenai Academy can also tender high school diplomas, and facilitate early enrollment at North Idaho College.  Residents are housed in newly remodeled rooms and have access to a full size gymnasium, classrooms, a dining hall, a landscaped outdoor courtyard and a common area where kids can interact.

As a part of Kootenai Medical Center, a Magnet hospital, we can offer a number of specialty and subspecialty medical services.  These include onsite pediatric care, speech therapy, occupational therapy, chaplaincy services, physical therapy, diabetes management, and nutritional/dietary support.  Due to the wide range of services we offer, Kootenai Behavioral Health Center is able to accept and support teens with chronic medical conditions.  Also, our on-site, Acute Youth Psychiatric Service is available for stabilizing emergent or new psychiatric disorders.
